Pauline Viardot – namesake of the famous soprano, Polina Pasztircsák – was one of the most charismatic musical figures of the XIX. century. The french mezzo (sister of Maria Malibran) took piano lessons from Liszt and had close friendship with Chopin arranging some of his Mazurkas as songs. Berlioz, Gounod, Saint-Saëns and Meyerbeer dedicated their opera-heroines to her. |
